For my yaoi-ambivalent sistren

For those among us who adore yaoi in theory but are put off by the often… interesting ideas about consent and what constitutes a healthy relationship, I have begun compiling a list of non-creepy yaoi manga. If anyone has any recs they’d like to share, I’ll add them to the list with credit.

Please be aware that not all manga by authors on this list are safe.

Mr Convenience, aka Benriya-San, by Yamato Nase:

Summary: Mr Convenience is a couple of stories all centred around a business which does basically whatever. Chiba, in the first and fourth chapters, mostly does jobs like rescuing lost pets and helping people screw in light bulbs, while Miyashiro, in the second and third, would like you to know that he is not a hooker, kthnxbai.

Mamotte Agemasu! by Yamato Nase:

Summary: Takao-kun is deeply obsessed with protecting his older brother - a clumsy but nice teacher. His brother suddenly has some serious problems because of one student. Takao decides to become friends with this rich and annoying boy to help out his brother. Will he succeed? Who is the mysterious brother-stalker?!

Warning: contains an underage boy (about 13, I think) paired with a man in his 20s.

Future Lovers, aka Mirai No Kioku and Kaze No Yuku by Kunieda Saika:

Summary: A sweet romance which starts off as a drunken (but entirely consensual) one night stand but develops into something more.

50x50, by Kunieda Saika:

Summary: Two playboy types keep accidentally sleeping together, and slowly fall in love while loudly proclaiming their heterosexuality to everyone who will listen, including each other and themselves.

Notes: Actually, most things by Kunieda Saika seem to be free of unintentional creepiness, but many of her works are very intentionally disturbing. These tend to be twisty, so examples would be spoilery, but be warned. One story – I won’t say which – involves a subversion of Rape Is Love, in which the survivor had feelings for his rapist which didn’t survive the incident. If you have specific triggers, PM me and I’ll tell you which ones to avoid.

Kakkowarukute Kakkoii Kimi, by Asou Kai:

Summary: Ever since they were little, Yukihisa and Takashi have always been together. However, Takashi recently started acting strange towards Yukihisa. Takashi refuses to come near Yukihisa, baffling him. Takashi offers no explanation for his actions, causing Yukihisa to be filled with doubts about their friendship. What can Takashi be hiding from Yukihisa that's causing him to keep one meter away from him?

4) Maki no Iibun (Maki's Reasoning): A short story from the side of Hayama's ex-lover, Maki.

5) Fureru Chikasa de (So Close That It Touches): Junpei and Tsutoma are high school students and best friends. Tsutoma flirts with Junpei constantly, but does he mean it or is it just a game?

I'm Serious in My Own Way, aka Sorenari ni Shinken nan desu, by Asou Kai

One Heart by Miyamoto Kano

Summary: A story about a part-time, student worker and his ex-salaryman boss. When his boss's company is in danger of going bankrupt, how will the part-timer convince his ex-salaryman to take a loan from him?

A Love Song For The Miserable, AKA Ochibure Shinshi ni Ai no Uta, by Yukimura

Summary: Asada is truly miserable. After three years, he's been reunited with Nao, who has succeeded as a patisserie and is being courted by Asada’s department store. They parted badly, but Asada’s secret love hasn’t faded. Is it as hopeless as he thinks it is?

Vinny is homophobic, Kyle is gay and in a relationship with Sean. When Vinny finds out about it, troubles have their start.

Notes: Warning for child sexual abuse, drug addiction, violence, death... all sorts of unpleasantness. It's all unpleasant on purpose, though, so we're good. No, seriously, I thoroughly reccomend it as long as you're in the mood to have your heart broken.

The Sweet and Devoted Me, aka Ichizude Karen na Ore-sama, by Akira Norikazu

Summary: Itsuki is the number one host at the club 'The Rose Garden'. Somehow, he has fallen in love with Ryou, the shy, innocent newcomer. And his main motivation for waking up each year is to look at the smiling face of Daichi, a human whose garden Prince Fiona lives in. However, the prince's disappointment lies in the fact that he can never meet him face to face. But, with the help of a witch who wants to grant Fiona one request as his birthday present, he is finally able to stand next to Daichi till the end of the rose blooming season.

4) Sakura -

So, Ayatsuji sets out to teach Ren how to cook, and clean and buy a train ticket (!!!) and in the process, the two fall in love. Honda slowly falls for Megumi, but only recognises his love when he accidentally catches Megumi masturbating and calling out another man's name. Is it already too late?

Notes: The prequel is not safe (WTF no just no), IDK about the side story.

Oita Shichatta aka Today's Skies Are Clear by Shinba Rize

Summary: Matsudaira Yasunobu and Hatori Takashi, President and Vice President of the student council are always seen bickering. If only he could remember why they broke up...

Fair warning, when it gets to the sex scene they start talking about piss and vomit. If you're squicked by that, just try not to read the dialoge in that bit and you'll be fine.

I just wanted to make a wee little reccomendation for Doukyuusei, because it's cute and unusual and the art style is not like anything else I've seen. Shonen-ai, though, not yaoi :(

This is SO COOL! I'm going to go through my stuff and make a list. I'll comment back here in a day or so. :D

Great! It's a short list right now, so I'd really appreciate anything you could add to it. I hope you enjoy the ones already on here. :-)

HaHa I love this list! I know I've read some stuff that fits this I'll come back and recommend more but for now I could only think of Dog Style by Motoni Modoru. (And I'm not even sure that this really counts<< the sex between the two main characters is entirely consensual however there is a rape backstory that kinda is rape-is-love-like but with the rapist being pictured as a complete monster. It's also dealt with as a very serious matter)
Also no rape-is-love in Koi ga Bokura wo Yurusu Hani also by Motoni Modoru as far as I can remember.(I'm really not too sure about that one but there's also a rape backstory that kinda says rape is a bad thing>__<)
And I think it applies to Ichigenme wa Yaruki no Minpou by fumi yoshinaga too. I remember I that was positively surprised at how patient and non-pushy the seme was.
Arg sorry for those kind of vague recommendations >____< I'd better go and do some research right?XD

Wonderful, I'll check those out, thanks! I think it's fine if the narrative treats it as a bad thing, but I'll put a note in case people disagree.

I've just read Ichigenme wa Yaruki no Minpou, and it's lovely, but there are a few niggles that keep it from qualifying. For the most part, Todou is very patient, yes, but there is that time when Tamiya is drunk and emotionally vulnerable and I think they only make out - it's not quite clear - but that's still too much. Then there's Todou getting grabby while Tamiya is asleep, and in later chapters Todou initiates penetrative sex against Tamiya's expressed wishes. These things are easily dismissed in casual reading by someone used to much worse, and it's definitelly better than most yaoi manga, but I don't think it belongs here.

I'll check out the others when I have time.

Good I really wasn't too sure about just HOW strict the rules are.XD# I'm sorry, I'll look more carefully before recommending anymore.
(For example I wasn't sure about the drunk scene, but thought it was probably ok because the way I interpreted it Tamiya gave his consent but wasn't really able to express it >_<;;)
Then I guess Fake by Sanami Mathoh probably also doesn't apply. (There's one scene when the seme Waiting for it for six out of seven volumes now refuses to have sex with the uke because he's emotionally vulnerable at the time, but in the next volume (the last one) they do have sex under only slightly different circumstances It's perfectly consensual and the uke has no regrets but it's undeniable that he was emotionally shaken just before they did it)..I don't know >-< It's really frightening and sad too see just HOW COMMON this is in yaoi mangas. I mean I know it adds to the drama but there have to be other ways to make a story interesting right? >_____<;;

Just for clarification so I don't bother you with entirely random recs that don't apply in the end: Does a sneaked away kiss on a sleeping person count? What about a forced kiss(on an awake person)? What if the attempt of having sex is stopped when the other part disagrees?
I think that's it for now. I hope I'm not bothering you too much >___

Dog style fits. I really liked it, too, so thanks! I'll put a note about the rape backstory.

♥ I really love it a lot!
Funny I wanted to suggest seduce me after the show by est em next but I guess someone was faster!XD Also the main story of Ultras also by est em (there's one oneshot 'the onlooker' however that is a little bit creepy...<< no rape though). And I'm sure there's something by Basso but I don't remember the title right now.

June 28 2011, 10:11:49 UTC 11 months ago

Wow, this looks awesome! Will look into these *v*

Oh, I'm also surprised that Show ga Hanetara Aimashou (Seduce Me After the Show) by est em didn't make it to the list. It's recommended even if you *don't* read yaoi. I just had to to buy the damn thing even after reading the scanlation. It's so. damn. good. And nothing creepy at all! If anything, it was stunningly beautiful in the simplicity of the emotions (and the wonderfully experimental drawings -- definitely not the sparkly, wide-eyed norm you see in most BL manga).

Dog Style by Modoru Motoni is also a fantastic read (rather realistic and deliciously boyish). Most of this mangaka's work is pretty worthwhile.

Ah, and Doushitemo Furetakunai by Kou Yoneda -- despite a lot of angst, it's definitely above your average BL story, and the drawings are very expressive.

Just because it's not on the list yet just means I haven't come accross it, not that it isn't worth being here. Dog Style was reccomended this morning and is now on the list, and I'll check the others out too. Thank you so much!

Oh, I'd thought you hadn't come across them ^^;; (maybe I expressed myself badly again).

Well, I've read a few of the titles on the list already, and I have to say so far they've been rather agreeable reads. Thank you very much for the time you spent compiling this list! =w=

Ahhh, this list is amazing! I've been looking for exactly these sorts for a while now after getting fed up with all the "no, don't" going on. (it even happens when the characters are like, prostitutes or sex fiends or really in love... makes no sense! @_@) Not once have I been able to find a yaoi manga where both of them enjoy the sex and admit it without even the "no, not there!" going on, and thanks to you, found one just second on the list! *_* /will go through even more

Wow, it's a good thing I saw this list. I'll be looking into your recs immediately. I gotta say my favorite is Doushitemo Furetakunai but almost all of Yoneda Kou's works I like anyway.

Thank you!

Read this earlier today: http://www.mangafox.com/manga/kimi_wa_amai_amai/ Consensual and safe sex; I was pretty impressed!

Chapters 5 and 6 are definitely not okay for this list--features an emotionally abusive relationship. Chapter 6.5 is dubious; it continues the story with the main couple, but the uke seems pretty reluctant (shyness is blamed).

September 27 2011, 00:06:04 UTC 8 months ago

Thanks for the list. I know this isn't the focus of the list, but adults having sex with underage teens and incest also creeps me out. I haven't read everything on list yet - I haven't run across any incest yet but Mamotte Agemasu had a 9th grader (who looks no older than 12) involved with a 20+ year-old man. Perhaps you could also note these things in the descriptions? I can check back after I've read more of them if you don't feel up to going through them all another time.

[info]helen_damnation

September 27 2011, 10:02:59 UTC 8 months ago

I do make a note of incest if it isn't obvious in the summary. I apologise for not warning for the underage sex in Mamotte Agemasu, it's something I should have done. Looking through the list, I don't recall any other instances of underage/overage couples.

Aaaah! *-* I'm going to add this entry to my memories, as soon as I get a beak I'll read your recs, I've not been to much in 'original' yaoi (I've been more into doujins of series and fanarts) mostly because of the 'rape is love' trope. Seriously Okane Ga Nai, wtf?!
Also, I've never read it, but a friend reccomended me, what are your toughs on 'La Vie En Rose'? :o
